Frequently Asked Questions about Basal Body Temperature

What does it mean if basal body temperature is consistently low?

If basal body temperature is persistently low without a high temperature phase or biphasic changes, be cautious as this may be a sign of lack of ovulation. The principle of basal body temperature curve formation is influenced by progesterone (the hormone secreted by the corpus luteum of the ovary after ovulation), which causes the temperature to be low before ovulation and high after ovulation. If there is no change in high and low temperature, it may either indicate pregnancy or lack of ovulation. Generally, if the temperature remains high for a long time, pregnancy is likely, and vice versa, if the temperature remains low, there may be no ovulation.

Therefore, if basal body temperature remains stable without significant fluctuations (0.3-0.5℃ difference between high and low temperatures), there may be no ovulation. Keep in mind that pregnancy cannot occur without ovulation, so if the basal body temperature remains consistently low with no fluctuations, it is recommended to consult a doctor and investigate the cause in order to find treatment.

Will high basal body temperature affect conception?

User: My basal body temperature is always high (between 36.6-37℃) in the morning, whether before or after ovulation, and when I consulted a doctor, they said that this is not normal. However, after undergoing many tests including blood tests and hormone examinations, everything seems normal. Why does my body temperature remain high, and how can I make it normal?

Based on the user's description, a high basal body temperature may simply be an individual characteristic, as long as the blood and hormone tests are normal, which should not affect conception.

If the basal body temperature is high, as long as there is biphasic basal body temperature with 14 days of high temperature and 14 days of low temperature, with a temperature difference of 0.3-0.5℃, it indicates normal ovulation and does not affect conception.

Regarding why basal body temperature is high, first of all, measuring basal body temperature is just an auxiliary means of determining ovulation and is influenced by artificial factors, environmental factors, mood, sexual activity, sleep, diet, and personal physical condition. Therefore, basal body temperature cannot be 100% accurate.

What should I do if basal body temperature fluctuates?

Basal body temperature may vary each day, but for normal ovulation, biphasic changes in basal body temperature should be detectable. If the basal body temperature fluctuates irregularly throughout the menstrual cycle and no biphasic curve can be found, it may be related to an irregular menstrual cycle. Menstrual irregularities can delay ovulation, affecting the levels of estrogen in the body and consequently causing changes in basal body temperature.

Although menstruation is present, it does not necessarily indicate normal ovulation. Therefore, it is recommended to check hormone levels in order to exclude problems with ovulation. If you want to accurately monitor ovulation, ultrasound monitoring may be a good option.
